Treatment for Adult Children of Alcoholics

Project Field Treatment

Context In Poland, approximately 1.5 million children have their childhood negatively impacted by an alcoholic father or mother. Most of the time these children are directly exposed to physical and psychological violence, and their social and economic needs are neglected. As the child grows up, it may develop the “Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA)” syndrome which is due to this particular childhood experience. While treatment for the addicted person might be accessible, the special needs of co-dependent family members, and especially children, are often neglected and professional help inexistent.

Project Under this project a service offer for adult children of alcohol dependent parents will be developed in the regions of Bielsko-Biala, Czechowice-Dziedzice and Żywiec-Dziedzic and connected to the already existing Blue Cross Counselling Centres in the same places. In each location, at least one ACA group offer will be created, with an average of 40 young adults participating in groups each year. This offer will be complemented by individual therapy for people with ACA syndrome. Individual counselling services by professional therapists trained in the field of ACA will be provided in each counselling centre during 4 hours per week, for an average of 4 clients in a week.

Project Goal Main goal of the project is to develop a professional service offer for adult children of alcohol dependent parents in the region of Silesia in Poland. The project is closing an important gap since therapeutic help for co-dependent family members is almost inexistent in the country.
