| Context |
Research worldwide shows that self-help groups offer one of the most effective methods in preventing alcohol and drug dependent persons from relapses. A small network of self-help groups exists in three states of southern Brazil: Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná. Self-help groups consist of weekly meetings providing a holistic treatment approach to the dependent people and their families, addressing their physical, psychological and spiritual needs in relation to the substance misuse problems. |

| Project |
The project of Blue Cross Brazil aims at supporting and expanding the network of self-help groups and therapeutic communities by providing leadership training, coaching and supply of didactical material. An additional goal of the project consists in the exchange of know-how and experience between the different groups. All in all, the BC Brazil proposes to train 2650 persons as volunteers and group leaders.
Other organizations like the Missão Evangélica União Cristã and the Igreja Evangélica de Confissão Luterana no Brasil will be involved in the project.
