SOS-Child Victims of Alcoholism

Project Field Prevention

Context In accordance with a widespread custom found in the capital Ndjamena, mothers dip their finger in a calabash filled with alcohol and then put it in the mouth of their babies. They believe the baby is the incarnation of its deceased grandparents, and that this simple gesture pays tribute to them. When the child finally goes to school, it will watch 60% of its teachers drink excessive amounts of alcohol, and in its free time it will play in streets lined with bars sporting large advertisements for Chadian breweries.

Given this high-risk environment, it is hardly surprising that so many children drink alcohol. A study (CEDIRAA, 2003) carried out in two areas of Ndjamena revealed that 73.3% of children aged 6-14 drink alcohol from time to time!

Project In response to this situation, the Chadian Blue Cross implemented a prevention project, called “SOS-Child Victims of Alcoholism”, to be carried out in a school located in a slum (south of Ndjamena). As it is also important to help parents beat their addiction - because this will help them better carry out their parental responsibilities - the Chadian Blue Cross also facilitates the access to treatment.
